Rowan Branch

18 x 23 cm ✦ Watercolour, gouache and coloured pencil on paper

In old Finnish folk religions the rowan tree was seen as sacred. It was believed to repel evil and bring good things to whomever’s yard it grew on – the berries were thought to be especially powerful.

I find these trees extremely beautiful in the fall and its berries a very welcome splash of colour in the dark evenings of the late year.
